Playing Position for Violin/Viola

Here are the steps for going from Rest Position to Playing Position.

1 . Start in rest position. Feet together with your instrument under your right arm.

2. Step your feet about shoulder width apart.

3. Grab the instrument with your left hand on the lower shoulder of the violin.

4. Extend your left arm with your instrument out in front of you.

5. Turn the instrument upside down and bring it to the top of your head, make sure the violin stays horizontal to the ground!

7. Rest the instrument on your shoulder. Make sure it is really sitting on top of the shoulder, and not sinking towards your chest!

8. Look to the left so that your nose is over the strings.

9. Rest your head on the instrument. The side of your chin, or maybe your jaw will sit the chin rest.
