Bow Hand for Violin/Viola

Click here to see a good video demonstration of how to make a bow hand!

Here are some pictures to help you remember what a good bow hand should look like. You may notice that your friends who play the cello hold their bow a little differently.

In a good bow hand, you should feel your index finger and middle fingers lying on top of the bow. Your thumb should be on across from your middle fingers, almost like you are pinching (gently!) the bow between your thumb and middle fingers. You pinkie should sit on top of the bow on its fingertip.

The Black piece on the bow that holds the hair is called the frog. The tip of your thumb should sit on the stick of the bow, right next to frog. The star in this picture shows your where your thumb should go.

Do not squeeze or press on the bow! Keep your fingers relaxed to get a good sound.
